The difference is almost always workflow: how far you walk, how often you cross someone else’s path, and whether the things you need are stored where you use them. This guide walks through how designers actually make those calls, so you can pressure-test your own space before you spend anything.

Efficiency in a kitchen comes down to three things.
The first is steps saved. Every trip across the room to get a colander is a trip you make thousands of times over the life of the kitchen. The second is clearance, meaning enough room to open a dishwasher without blocking the path to the refrigerator, and enough room for two people to pass without turning sideways. The third is proximity, which means storing things where the task happens. Spices next to the range, dish towels next to the sink, mixing bowls next to the counter you actually mix on.
Everything else, including finishes, cabinet doors, and countertop material, is a decision you make after the layout works. Getting that order backward is the single most common reason a beautiful kitchen feels wrong to cook in.
The kitchen work triangle connects your three primary work centers, meaning the refrigerator, the sink, and the cooking surface. Every appliance needs counter beside it. Give the refrigerator at least 15 inches of landing space on the handle side so you have somewhere to set a full grocery bag. Give the cooking surface counter on both sides. Give the sink counter on both sides as well, with the larger run on whichever side you prep.
Draw the swings. Refrigerator doors, oven doors, dishwasher doors, and the entry door to the room all occupy floor space when open, and they should never collide with each other or with a work surface. A dishwasher that blocks the only path to the range is a design that will annoy someone every single night.

An island needs 42 to 48 inches of clearance on every working side. In a room under roughly 13 feet wide, an island usually costs you more in circulation than it returns in counter space. Every corner in an L or U layout creates a cabinet that is harder to reach into and more expensive to fit out properly. Plan for that with the right corner hardware rather than pretending the space is usable as-is.
Removing a wall gains sightlines and loses wall cabinets. Make sure the storage you give up is replaced somewhere in the plan before the wall comes down.
Once the footprint is settled, cabinet interiors decide how the kitchen feels day to day. Drawers beat doors for base cabinets in almost every case, because you can see and reach the back without kneeling. Deep drawers near the range hold pots better than a low cabinet with a single shelf. A pullout beside the prep zone for trash and recycling saves more steps than almost any other single decision.
Think in terms of first reach. The items you touch daily should be between hip and eye level in the zone where you use them. Everything seasonal goes high or low. Two systems get decided late and should be decided early.
Ventilation is the first. A range hood needs to be sized to the cooking surface and ducted to the outside to actually remove what cooking produces. Washington State’s Department of Health explains why ducted kitchen exhaust matters and why recirculating units fall short, and the guidance applies anywhere. If you are moving the cooktop as part of your layout, the duct run has to be part of that decision, not an afterthought once the cabinets are ordered.
Light is the second. Every work zone needs task lighting that is not blocked by your own body when you stand at the counter. Under-cabinet lighting over the prep zone does more for daily usability than any ceiling fixture.
None of these are expensive to fix on paper. All of them are expensive to fix after installation.
There is no single answer, because efficiency depends on the room’s dimensions and how many people cook. Galley and U-shaped kitchens tend to produce the tightest work triangles. L-shaped kitchens with a well-placed island work well in open floor plans. The most efficient layout is the one that fits your room’s proportions and your household’s habits.
